Pamela Hyde, JD, Administrator, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) How Consumers Can Play a Role in Health Care Reform - Panel Discussion The comprehensive health care reform signed into law by President Obama in March 2010 represents a set of new opportunities and challenges for the consumer/survivor movement. Panelists will discuss how consumers can have an active role in the process. Robert Whitaker - Award-winning journalist and author of Mad in America and the new book Anatomy of an Epidemic. Dr. Mark Ragins, MD Mark Ragins, MD is a leading psychiatrist in the recovery movement in mental health care. He was the co-recipient of the American Psychiatric Association’s 1995 van Ameringen Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation and was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2006 for his continuing work in recovery-based mental health care. Mark Ragins also appears prominently in the book The Soloist by Steve Lopez. Black Men Speak: African American Men Tell their Story Hear the story of what it is like to be African-American men with substance
abuse and mental health issues and their individual roads to wellness and
recovery. Interwoven in their stories are challenges of trauma, family issues,
community violence, and the importance of faith, set in the context of the
legacy of slavery. |
